🍁 Fall Into Learning with AI: Spotlight 11 Deepening Reflection and Counselor Identity Through Mosaic

For Spotlight 11, we are excited to highlight the thoughtful and transformative ways Janet Neufeld integrates AI into her counseling courses, SCN-600/625 and PCN-670/672. Knowing that counseling requires ongoing self-reflection, emotional awareness, and a strong sense of professional identity, Janet uses Mosaic to help students engage more meaningfully with these core elements.

Mosaic becomes a creative partner in designing purposeful Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs), not by replacing her voice, but by helping refine her ideas, spark new possibilities, and strengthen the reflective process for students.

Her focus remains deeply rooted in counseling competencies:

  • Self-regulation
  • Countertransference awareness
  • Emotional resilience
  • Trauma-informed support
  • GCU’s professional dispositions

One of Janet’s standout CATs showcases how AI can amplify—not overshadow—the human elements of reflection and personal growth.

📸 CAT Highlight: “Two Photos, One Story of Emotion”

A reflective, optional Classroom Assessment Technique

Students choose between two paths:

1. Reflect in Writing

Students respond to guided prompts such as:

  • What emotion does the photo evoke related to your experiences with self-reliance, challenges, poverty, health, or relationships?
  • Why did you choose this image?
  • How does it connect to something you’ve felt or experienced recently?
  • How would you support a student who has experienced similar emotions or trauma?
  • Which GCU disposition guides your response?

OR

2. Wrap-Up Question

Students analyze how one of the images speaks to their emotional journey and connect it to:

  • A theory studied in class
  • A GCU disposition that informs their approach

🍂 Why This Matters

Janet’s work illustrates how AI tools like Mosaic can enhance emotional insight, deepen personal reflection, and support the development of compassionate, grounded counselor identities.

Her approach reinforces a central truth of responsible AI integration: when guided by purpose and expertise, AI helps us create space for more meaningful human learning.

CETLA celebrates Janet for her innovative use of AI and her commitment to shaping thoughtful, reflective future counselors.
